ABWH Awards

  • Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Book Award

Award: A certificate and addition to the ABWH approved Africana women’s bibliography resource guide with annotated entry and monetary award.

Criteria: Any monograph, anthology or scholarly article written about or by an Africana woman scholar. The Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Book Award committee seeks to locate innovative, well researched and insightful scholarship that will enhance the growing corpus of Africana women’s historiography.The published work should be between the August and June of an academic year. Nominations by ABWH members, academic colleagues, publishing agencies are encouraged but not required.

  • Drusilla Dunjee Houston Award

Award: A merit based monetary prize awarded to one or two Africana women graduate students pursing masters or doctoral level degrees in history.

Criteria: The student(s) should have a minimum GPA of 3.2 at the time of her application. The application packet includes: two academic recommendations and one recommendation from an ABWH member. The basis for awarding the scholarship is weighted on the applicant’s essay of 25-40 pages on a topic pertaining to Africana women in history, culture, politics, art and/or science, other categories are possible for consideration as deemed appropriate by the committee. Application packets are submitted between March and June of an academic year. All applicants will be contacted by a committee member in writing of the committee’s decision.

  • Lorraine Anderson Williams Leadership Award

Award: A professional merit based recognition by peers in the field of history. As well as, a monetary prize awarded to one or two Africana women scholars, who have taught on the collegiate level over 15 years.

Criteria: A scholar is nominated by a combination of two groups: current or former graduate student, current or former departmental chair, current or former college dean, current or former university administrator or current ABWH member. The nominated scholar should have: published a minimum of 5 works any combination of monographs, journal articles, websites, book reviews and/or academic reports. Their professional work should include service to their respective institution in mentoring/inspiring students and colleagues. As well as continue the legacy of Dr. Williams through working unceasingly in making a broader appeal of Africana history to all citizens as a necessary component to a well-rounded life.

  • Lillian Hornsby Memorial Award

Award: A merit based monetary prize awarded to one or two Africana women undergraduate students pursing a degree in history or peripheral humanities field.

Criteria: The student(s) should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of her application. The application packet includes: two academic recommendations and one recommendation from an ABWH member. The basis for awarding the scholarship is weighted on the applicant’s essay of 10-15 pages on a topic pertaining to Africana women in history, culture, politics, art and/or science, other categories are possible for consideration as deemed appropriate by the committee. Application packets are submitted between March and June of an academic year. All applicants will be contacted by a committee member in writing of the committee’s decision.

  • Rosalyn Terborg-Penn Junior Faculty Award

Award: A professional merit based recognition by peers in the field of history. As well as, a monetary prize awarded to one or two Africana women scholars, who have taught on the collegiate level from 7-10 years. The monetary award is given to defray costs associated with bringing interested students to the annual ASALH/ABWH meeting.

Criteria: A scholar is nominated by a combination of two groups: current or former undergraduate/graduate student, current or former departmental chair, current or former college dean, current or former university administrator or current ABWH member. The nominated scholar should have: published a minimum of 3 works any combination of monographs, journal articles, websites, book reviews and/or academic reports. This award recipient should have created a minimum of 2 years of ASALH session panels from their students.
